My friend Jonny asked me the other day what makes a good camera. I discussed the usual things you might look for in a camera – image size, availability of lenses and accessories, major manufacturers, image sensors and the like. The one thing I failed to mention is ease of use and how it feels in your hand.

I have found that some digital cameras, not so much the newer ones, as manufacturers are figuring this out, have very complicated menus, making it hard to find the function you want to change. Being able to easily navigate these menus is key for easy operation. In addition, simply the feeling of the camera in your hand can make the whole difference of whether or not you enjoy using it.

So Jonny – my greatest recommendation for someone buying a new camera, since you asked, is to go to Best Buy or somewhere they have cameras on display, and hold them, figure out how they work and fire some test pictures. Talking megapixels and other technical subjects is fun for us geeks but if the camera isn’t easy or fun to use it won’t get used nearly as much as you intend.
